RETINAL WELLNESS CLINIC

Retinal Wellness Clinic

The retina is the sensory tissue within our eye responsible for converting light into vision.  It plays a crucial part in our ability to see clearly and can be affected by numerous eye and systemic conditions. A detailed retinal exam can detect diabetes, hypertension, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other diseases. Many of these conditions will progress through several stages before they start to affect your eyesight.

Two of the leading causes of blindness among adults are Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy.  The Doctors at North Shore Eye Health and Wellness are trained in the diagnosis and management of these conditions, as well as other retinal complications such as retinal holes, tears, and detachments.

However, our proactive medical philosophy revolves around providing our patients with the necessary tools and education to prevent these potentially sight-threatening conditions.  What better form of treatment than prevention? We offer several unique and technologically advanced services to assist with retinal disease prevention including:

Annual Retinal photography screenings

Similar to dental X-Rays, annual retinal photographs help the Doctors as North Shore Eye Health and Wellness monitor for subtle changes taking place, from year to year, within the retinal tissue. With retinal photography and imaging, we are able to screen for early signs of retinopathy. When diagnosed early, various advanced treatments will be available to help us manage these ocular and systemic conditions.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

OCT technology allows the Doctors at North Shore Eye Health and Wellness the ability to comfortably and rapidly scan each of the 10 individual layers of the retina in fine detail.  This technology assists with early diagnosis of subtle retinal changes found in Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy and even Glaucoma, to name a few.

Macular Pigment Optical Density screenings

Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) screenings quickly and non-invasively measure the density or thickness of 2 specific and protective pigments within the macula, the region of our retina responsible for your most detailed, central vision. Macular pigment plays an important role in protecting the cones and rods that reside behind the macula, which are responsible for your central vision. Thick, dense macular pigment is like having “internal sunglasses” to block the harmful blue light that can damage your eyes over time. At North Shore Eye Health and Wellness, we are able to asses if you are deficient in these areas and recommend nutritional supplementation to increase your MPOD score and protect your vision for years to come.

In Office Genetic Testing and Nutritional Counseling

At North Shore Eye Health and Wellness, we are committed to staying on the forefront of new technology and treatment options. We now offer genetic testing for people with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), patients who have a family history of AMD, or any patient with or without risk factors, interested in genetic screening. Recently, there have been many new studies on the best treatment for AMD, and we have developed a protocol for nutritional supplementation and genetic testing based on those studies. Using new technologies like the "Macula Risk" and "Vita Risk" genetic screening panels, is what sets North Shore Eye Health and Wellness apart from other eye clinics!  These individualized screening panels are performed in office with a simple cheek swab and can provide our Doctors with detailed analysis of your 5 to 10-year risk for development or progression of AMD as well as help with targeting the specific supplements and nutrients to prescribe to assist your body with the prevention of this devastating condition. Call or Stop by to ask us about this great service!
